Stop With The "LOL," Already!!!
It's time for the abbreviation "LOL" to die. Something that started out so innocently has now taken over, not only the written language, but the spoken language, as well. I have friends who cannot start or finish any sentence without the use of "LOL." Really, guys? Really? Are you really laughing out loud? I bet 9 times out of 10, you're not. And why is it necessary to actually say LOL? If I'm in your presence, I'll notice that you're laughing. Sure, we sometimes say, "ha ha" out loud, but that's for a dramatic, sarcastic effect. I find the LOL abbreviation to be misleading.
"Initialisms," as a whole, are out of control thanks mostly in part to text messaging. "ROTFL," "LMFAO," etc. are bringing our language to an entirely new low. Friends of mine, who are teachers, tell me stories of how the majority of their students actually turn in reports written entirely in text messaging language. It's no wonder that so many other countries' education systems are now greater than our own. We don't even have a grasp on our own language. I say blame it on "LOL."
Do ppl relly sav time whn they typ lke ths?
DOWN WITH LOL!!!!!!
OMG! U r sooooooooooo rt! I hv 2 thnk 2X as hrd to abrvt as I wld to just type out the whole word damnit! I can't tell you how much faster my typing just got. I was just thinking about this the other day - the destruction of the English language. I'm sure every generation has it's own "those dag nabbit kids can't speak right!"ness BUT this goes far beyond new slang. This is the denegration of spelling, grammer, literature and written language as we know it. Frankly it frightens me as much as the whole PC thing does. First it's not ok to say certain words, or phrases, or express certain thoughts all together - mostly things that are deemed negative. Then entire words become obsolete...
Punctuation too. If people used proper puncutation, and actual, full-length real words, no one would need to point out to their reader that something is humorous (LOL) or that they are excited (!!!!!) or add emphasis via the over-use of vowels (see the soooooooooooo above) - which, by the way, most people can't do right anyway. It's "loooooooooooooooooooove" not "loveeeeeeeeeeeee" or "ooooooooooooh my gosh" not "ohhhhhhhhhhhh my gosh" The "e" is silent and the "h" is just air. What are you trying to say exactly? Are you really you're trying to express excessive awe or pauses or are you panting? Come ON! Ah I could go on for days about the importantce of language and how speech isn't really free when you take away language and this is all just more proof that George Orwell was a prophet, but I digress.
It's annoooooooooooooooooooying!!!!
